First Linux Movies Conference in LA

Robin Rowe, project manager of the Film Gimp, and key public figure on the use of Linux in VFX, announced that Linux Movies Conference will take place on February 18 in Los Angeles. Rod Bogart, lead R&D developer, will represent ILM and will speak about the recently announced OpenEXR format. Representative from other studios will present throughout the days including: Alan Boucek from Tippett Studios, Thad Beier co-founder of Hammerhead, Sam Richards from Imageworks, Nathan Wilson from Dreamworks Feature Animation, Dan Novy of Flash Film Works, Caroline Dahllöf of Rhythm and Hues, Ray Feeney cofounder of Silicon Grail, and Jack Brooks of Walt Disney Feature Animation.

American Cinematheque Honors ILM and Skywalker Sound History and Contributions

The American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre will present a large scale tribute to ILM and Skywalker Sound, covering both their history and techniques. The event will take place between February 6, 2003 and February 16, 2003. Some of the speakers expected include Directors George Lucas and James Cameron, VFX Supervisors Dennis Muren, John Knoll, Pablo Helman, Eric Brevig, and Stefen Fangmeier, Animation Directors Rob Coleman and Dan Taylor, veteran model makers Lorne Peterson, Steve Gawley and Jeff Mann, new R&D Director Steve Sullivan, master digital model maker Geoff Campbell, technical animation supervisor James Tooley, and VFX Producer and big cheese Patty Blau, plus sound guys like Ben Burtt, Gary Rydstrom, Chris Boyes, and Randy Thom.

LEAF (the London Effects and Animation Festival) has joined forces with the London 3D Festival to bring one of the biggest VFX events in Europe. ILM will have a substantial presence, with speakers presenting work from Star Wars Episode 2 and MIB2.
