Gangs of NY, Minority Report and ILM Veterans Get Noms for Satellite Awards

ILM's work on Minority Report and Gangs of New York has been nominated for Best Visual Effects for the 7th Annual Golden Satellite Awards. Scott Farrar (supervisor of Minority Report), and Michael Owens, Ed Hirsh and Jon Alexander (Supervisor, Associate Supervisor and Compositing Supervisor respectively for Gangs of New York) along Bruce Steinheimer (special effects coordinator for Gangs of New York) get the nods. The other nominees are Spider Man, with John Dykstra getting the nod, Road to Perdition, Michael J. McAlister getting the nomination, and the team from Weta Digital for the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which includes Jim Rygiel, Joe Letteri, Randal William Cook and Alex Funke. Additionally, George Lucas will receive a special achievement award for his achievements in digital technologies and sound.

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that new plans are in place to begin the Letterman Digital Complex at the Presidio, where ILM will eventually move. Gordon Radley, Lucasfilm's President, and recently featured in the Portrait series, announced that construction could begin in 2 months.
