The Two Towers Wins for Best VFX, Eric Armstrong Wins for The ChubbChubbs

The winner for the 75th Academy Award for Best VFX is the team from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: Jim Rygiel, Joe Letteri, Alex Funke and Randall William Cook. Spirited Away has won for Best Animated Film, while The ChubbChubbs, by Imageworks and directed by former ILM animator Eric Armstrong, has won for Best Animated Short.

Cinesite L.A.'s VFX Operations to Close

The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Cinesite LA will cease providing VFX work for films. Currently they are finishing what will be their last project, the highly anticipated X-Men 2. Kodak will still retain the company but it will focus on their their traditional business of scanning, mastering and other postproduction work.

Bounty Hunter Hits the Stores

LucasArts' Bounty Hunter for the Play Station 2 should start hitting the stores today. The game, based on the exploits of Jango Fett, was done with the help of ILM, who contributed to the cutscenes. The version for the GameCube is expected December 5.

Weta Takes Gold for Lord of the Rings, Pixar and PDI Also Score

The team of Weta Workshop and Weta Digital, lead by Richard Taylor, Mark Stetson, Jim Rygiel and Randall William Cook have won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Shrek, by PDI won the first ever Animated Film Oscar, while For the Birds by Pixar won for best Animated Short.

Anne Marie Polland Dies

The San Francisco Gate has reported today that Anne Marie Polland has passed away. She was a costume maker at ILM and worked on the original trilogy. She was 54. She is survived by one sister and two brothers. Our condolences to her family and friends.

The Secret Lab to Close Doors

In a stunning (though not completely unexpected) development, Disney has decided to close The Secret Lab, its in house CG and FX facility that was formed out of Dream Quest Images and Disney's on CG department. DQI was among the oldest FX facilities around, and some ILM FX supervisors got came from there.
