The SIGGRAPH 2004 Course list has just been published and three members of ILM will be speakers at a crowd simulation course: Associate VFX Supervisor Christophe Hery, and Digital Artists Doug Sutton and Hiromi Ono. Other VFX courses include looks at The Lord of the Rings VFX and Shrek 2, and participation from members of ESC, PDI/Dreamworks, Rhythm + Hues , Imageworks, Digital Domain and Disney.

LA SIGGRAPH Presents Matrix Revolutions VFX

The Los Angeles SIGGRAPH chapter will have in its November meeting a showcase of the VFX work of Matrix Revolutions with key personnel like ESC Supervisors John Gaeta, John DJ DesJardin, George Murphy (formerly of ILM) and Matt Dessaro, along with Jim Berney (Imageworks), Craig Hayes (Tippett) and Michael Schmitt (Giant Killer Robots). It will take place November 20, 2003 at 7:30 pm at the Digital Cinema Laboratory in the Pacific Theater in Hollywood.

Hal Hickel to Appear at the San Francisco SIGGRAPH Chapter

The Hollywood Reporter's SIGGRAPH 2003 Preview

The Hollywood Reporter ran an article a while ago about SIGGRAPH 2003, with many interesting musings, including Darin Grant's (from Digital Domain and Chair of the Animation Festival) comments on the animations shown this year, including ILM's R&D reel, speculation about the possible candidates for the VFX Bake-Off early next year, recruiting requirements from several studios (Ken Maruyama of ILM comments, and there's info about Digital Domain, Tippett Studio, Imageworks, Rhythm and Hues and PDI/Dreamworks), and even the extreme measures studios engage to attract talent (like the situation between Weta Digital and PDI/Dreamworks).

ILM at SIGGRAPH 2003: Softimage Customer Presentations

Softimage's website has updated its schedule for SIGGRAPH. and several ILM members will be demonstrating how Softimage has been used in productions. Animation Supervisor Dave Andrews will be at the user group meeting. At the Softimage booth, Technical Animator Scott Benza will talk about The Hulk (Tuesday July 29, 2003 at3 pm), while Animator Scott Wirtz will talk about Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (Wednesday July 30, 2003 at 11:30 pm). Bradley Gabe and developer Tim Belsher will be presenters at the Softimage Advanced Technical Seminars.

The SIGGRAPH 2003 website has started posting the schedules for the courses. Associate VFX Supervisor Christophe Hery will present BSSRDF techniques before lunch. In an update, Rod Bogart, lead researcher at ILM, will present how ILM does Image Based Lighting and High Dynamic Range techniques, in particular with OpenEXR.
