ILM at SIGGRAPH 2003: Preview 5, Computer Animation Festival

SIGGRAPH 2003 has posted its list of accepted pieces for Animation Festival. ILM has one accepted, an R&D reel. Eternal Gaze, by Sam Chen, took Best Animated Short, while Tim Tom, by Romain Segaud and Christel Pougeoise at Supinfocom, took Jury Honors. Other studios with pieces include ESC, Imageworks, Digital Domain, Framestore/CFC, Weta Digital, Rhythm and Hues, Tippett Studio, Glassworks, Aardman, Blur, Passion Pictures, and covering such projects as The Matrix Reloaded, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Star Trek: Nemesis, Daredevil, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, xXx, and many more.

The schedule for Alias/Wavefront's Maya Masterclasses event is now online. Tim Naylor, CG artist at ILM, will give a presentation on Dynamics Animation on Monday July 28th, 2003 at the San Diego Marriott during SIGGRAPH. People from other studios like LucasArts, PDI, Imageworks, Digital Domain, and Weta Digital will also present other classes covering a wide range of topics.

Pat Hanrahan to Be Honored with the Steven A. Coons Award

Pat Hanrahan will receive the Steven A. Coons Award at SIGGRAPH 2003. The award recognizes "Outstanding Creative Contributions to Computer Graphics". He worked at the Lucasfilm Graphics Group where he was one of the chief architects of RenderMan.

ILM at SIGGRAPH 2003: Preview 4, Papers

The Papers program has been put online and ILM has an accepted paper in cooperation with Stanford University called "Smoke Simulation For Large-Scale Phenomena" to be presented Thursday July 31 at 8 am. There is also a paper by Pixar on "Untangling Cloth", plus Dan B. Goldman, part time ILM CG Supervisor and grad student at the University of Washington is one of the co-authors of a paper on "Shadow Matting and Compositing".

ILM at SIGGRAPH 2003: Preview 3, Special Sessions

The Special Sessions program has been updated and ILM will present a complete session on how they have brought animated characters to life during their long history. The session, titled Creatures, Critters & Clones: Styles and Techniques Unique to Industrial Light + Magic, will have most of the Animation Directors and Supervisors presenting: Tom Bertino, Colin Brady, Hal Hickel, Dave Andrews, Dan Taylor, and Jenn Emberly.

ILM at SIGGRAPH 2003: Preview 2, Courses

The SIGGRAPH 2003 website has just updated its Courses section, and once again presenters from many VFX facilities will be among the speakers. Christophe Hery, Associate VFX Supervisor at ILM, will speak at the RenderMan Course on Sunday July 27, 2003, about the techniques for rendering Dobby (in particular his skin with sub-surface scattering techniques) from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. There will also be a look on the techniques used on Pixar's Finding Nemo. Speakers from Pixar, Imageworks, Weta Digital, and Disney will also be present on several other Courses.

Ron Fedkiw to Talk around Bay Area about Simulations

Both Bay Area SIGGRAPH Chapters will have Ron Fedkiw giving talks about simulation. Ron Fedkiw, Computer Science Professor at Stanford, has been a consultant for ILM for the past to years and he and several graduate students have worked on such diverse projects as water dynamics simulations, cloth dynamics simulations and fire simulations, in cooperation with ILM. The San Francisco Chapter will have its meeting March 7, 2003, while the Silicon Valley Chapter will have its meeting March 13, 2003.

San Francisco SIGGRAPH Presents ILM 2002 Academy Reels

The SIGGRAPH San Francisco Chapter's February Meeting will have the reels ILM presented for the Academy VFX Bake-Off. Presenting the reels will be Rob Coleman, for Star Wars Episode 2, John Berton and Tom Bertino, for Men in Black 2, Lindy De Quattro and Steve Braggs, for Minority Report, and Bill George, for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The event will take place February 24, 2003 at 7:30pm at the Herbst Theatre in the War Memorial Veterans Building.
