ILM at SIGGRAPH 2002: Jenn Emberly to Talk about Chuck Jones

The SIGGRAPH website has updated its Special Session listings, and lead animator Jenn Emberly will participate on the session dedicated to great and late Chuck Jones. Also the participants of the Spider-Man session are up including veterans like Scott Stokdyk and Ken Hahn. We also list the Animation Festival pieces since the list at the site has been removed temporarily.

ILM at SIGGRAPH 2002: ILM Speakers Announced for Episode 2 Special Session

The lineup for the Episode 2 CG Characters Special Session at SIGGRAPH 2002 has been updated and it consists of lead modeler Geoff Campbell, lead developers Zoran Kacic-Alesic and Sebastian Marino, and technical animation supervisor James Tooley. In related news the Lord of the Rings Special Session has unfortunately been canceled. A Special Session on Spider-Man will fill the space.

Also just recently added to the SIGGRAPH 2002 website is the list of all accepted works to the Electronic Theatre and Animation festival. Among the VFX works accepted are clips from Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Men in Black 2, Spider-Man, The Time Machine, Panic Room, Blade 2, the Carl and Ray Blockbuster commercials, The One, Dinotopia, Oscar nominated short 50% Grey, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Stuart Little 2, The Sum of All Fears and a teaser for Pixar's next Finding Nemo.

Former ILMer Josh Pines to Speak about Digital Timing and Mastering for Film

Former ILM Head of Imaging and Digital Photography Scanning Supervisor Josh Pines will be on hand as one of the speakers of the March LA SIGGRAPH chapter, entitled 'Digital Aspects of Color Timing and Mastering for Film'. Josh Pines is now Director of Imaging R & D at Technique and worked on such projects as Episode 1, A.I., Pearl Harbor and T2 among many others.

The SIGGRAPH 2002 website has just unveiled the Course listing for this year's Conference, with a record 59, and again we have participation from ILM members in the RenderMan course. Also members from many other studios, like Pixar, Imageworks, Digital Domain, Weta Digital, Dreamworks, Cinesite, Blue Sky Studios, and Centropolis will also participate in this and several other courses.

San Francisco SIGGRAPH Chapter to Go Behind the Scenes of Monsters Inc.

The San Francisco SIGGRAPH local chapter will have at its next meeting a presentation by Pixar about Monsters Inc. The event will highlight the behind the scenes work done to realize this film and includes an all star panel. The event will take place at the Academy of Art College Theater, on February 25 from 6:30 PM to 10 PM.

Mary Beth Haggerty (ILMCP) Speaks in San Antonio

CG Supervisor Mary Beth Haggerty will be the featured speaker this month at the San Antonio SIGGRAPH chapter. She works mainly at ILMCP but has worked on several notable ILM film projects including Episode 1. An her bio lists her as TD for Episode 2, probably the first non-supervisor position announced for the movie.

SIGGRAPH 2001 Software Vendors Show ILM Pictures

Several major 3D product vendors, like SGI, Alias/Wavefront, Softimage, and Discreet, count ILM as one of their most prominent and bigger customers. It's no surprise that they enlist the help of ILM (and other facilities) folks to help marketing, by showcasing some of the amazing work they have done in the previous year. Both Alias/Wavefront and Softimage have posted their official pictures of some of their SIGGRAPH 2001 events and some of them show a some of the talented ILM individuals that took part in the presentations.

One of the highlights of this year's SIGGRAPH was the Special Session entitled "2001 on 2001" which brought together CG pioneer Robert Abel, futurist Syd Mead, director Peter Hyams, and ILM's own FX grand master Dennis Muren together to discuss the landmark Stanley Kubrick/Arthur C. Ed Catmull to Receive Recognition at SIGGRAPH 2001

During SIGGRAPH 2001, on August 12, Ed Catmull, president of Pixar will receive the President's Medal for Arts & Technology from NYIT, as reported by VFXPro.com. Mr. Catmull studied at the pioneering University of Utah, later going to NYIT and in the late 1970s to a small pioneering company in the Bay Area, and as they say, the rest is history.

Habib Zargarpour to Reveal "The Next Big Thing"

Habib Zargarpour, Associate Visual Effects Supervisor at ILM, will participate in a Birds of a Feather meeting at SIGGRAPH 2001. Habib was last seen making waves for The Perfect Storm (and getting a nomination for it) and on Episode 1 (mainly in charge of the Pod Race). Currently he is working on the yet to be released Episode 2.
