VES to Screen Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

The Visual Effects Society will be holding two screenings of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on Monday July 17, 2006. VFX Supervisor John Knoll will do a presentation with Q&A at the Los Angeles Screening while Animation Supervisor Hal Hickel will do the one in San Francisco.

The 9th VES eDIT Filmmaker's Festival, which will take place September 24-26 2006, will feature a session on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Additionally VFXWorld is reporting that the film contains about 1,000 VFX shots courtesy of ILM.

ILM Wins Three 2005 VES Awards for War of the Worlds

Last night the 4th Annual VES Awards, recognizing the best work from 2005, were handed at the Hollywood Palladium. ILM won in 3 categories, all for their work in War of the Worlds: Best Single VFX of the Year, Best Models and Miniatures and Best Compositing. Former ILM members John Lasseter and Jim Morris were awarded special awards for their contributions to the industry.

ILM received 10 nominations for the VES 2005 Awards for their work on Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith (4 nominations), War of the Worlds (3 nominations), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2 nominations) and Jarhead (1 nomination). Jim Morris and John Lasseter to Receive Special VES Awards

VFXWorld, The Hollywood Reporter and others reported that Jim Morris, former President of Lucas Digital and now at Pixar, will receive the VES Board of Directors' Award, while John Lasseter, one of Pixar's co-founders and former Lucasfilm CG Group member, will receive the VES Lifetime Achievement Award. The 4th Annual VES Awards will take place February 15, 2006.

The Visual Effects Society has put a preliminary list of the presentation for the 2005 edition of the VES Festival. Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith apparently will have at least one sessions, along with Sin City, Batman Begins, Madagascar and Herbie: Fully Loaded. The VES Festival 2005 at the will take place June 24-26 at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, California.

The list of speakers for the VES Festival 2004 is online as was previously announced on Deathfall.com. ILM VFX Supervisors Scott Squires and Ben Snow will present the work on Van Helsing, while CG Supervisor Chris Townsend will talk about ILM's work on the Day After Tomorrow. Also the Sky Captain talk has been scrapped and instead we'll get a presentation from Tippett Studio about their work on Hellboy and Starship Troopers 2.
