ILM Wins Two VES Awards for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Last night the VES Awards took place at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. ILM took 2 awards for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, for Best Matte Painting and Outstanding Special FX in a service to VFX in a Motion Picture. Other big winners included 2 awards for The Matrix Reloaded, by ESC and others, 3 for the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (not counting the one for actor) by Weta, 1 for Asylum for their work on Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, 1 for Finding Nemo, by Pixar, and 1 for The Last Samurai, by Pixel Magic, Rising Sun and Matte World Digital among others.

ILM Gets Thirteen VES Awards Nominations for 2003

The nominations for the second annual VES awards were announced today and several ILM projects got nominations in several categories including Hulk, Terminator 3, Pirates of the Caribbean, Master and Commander, and Peter Pan. ILM got a total of 13 nods (the most nominated facility) and for Best VFX in film, Pirates of the Caribbean is a finalist and was also the most nominated ILM project.

VES to Honor George Lucas for VFX Contributions

George Lucas will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Visual Effects Society during the next awards ceremony, February 18, 2003. This is the first award of its kind (a special award) to be given (at the VES Awards), and will recognize Lucas for his contributions, mainly how Star Wars and the founding of ILM to handle the visual effects revolutionized the VFX industry.

The VES/eDIT 2003 site has been updated, listing now the speakers for the festival. VFX Supervisor Pablo Helman will present terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, CG Supervisor Gerald Gutschmidt will talk about the Hulk, and Animation Supervisor will give the presentation on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. ILM VES Festival 2003 Speakers Announced

The VES festival website has finally put online the list of all speakers for all the sessions. For the Terminator 3 session we'll have VFX Supervisor Pablo Helman, Animation Supervisor Dan Taylor and Associate VFX Supervisor Samir Hoon. For The Hulk we'll have Sequence Supervisor Christopher Townsend and Animator Jamy Wheless. Many other high profile speakers were also announced for the other sessions.

Terminator 3 at VES 2003 Festival

The VES Festival has made a change in its schedule. Now instead of a look into Titles work by Imaginary Forces, we'll have a presentation by ILM about the work for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. The presentation will take place Saturday June 28 at 10 am. The VFX for the film were supervised by Pablo Helman with animation supervised by Dan Taylor.

VES 2003 Festival Preview

The 2003 VES festival schedule has recently been posted online. This year ILM will present their work on The Hulk on June 28, 2003 from 5 to 7 pm and there will be a special Hulk screening later that night. Other presentations include Finding Nemo by Pixar, a Tron retrospective, the VFX work on The Matrix Reloaded, X-Men 2 and The Core plus presentation on short films and title design.

Star Wars Episode 2 Wins Best Matte Paintings at First VES Awards

VFXPro.com is reporting on the list of winners for the first ever VES Awards. ILM won for Best Matte Painting in a Motion Picture, for Star Wars Episode 2 under the watch of Paul Huston, Yusei Uesugi and Jonathan Harb. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers dominated the film categories, including Best VFX under the supervision of Jim Rygiel, Joe Letteri, Randall William Cook, and Alex Funke, while Dinotopia dominated the TV categories. Stuart Little 2, which Eric Armstrong was the Animation Supervisor, won Best Character Animation in an Animated Motion Picture.

Ben Snow will present on Sunday October 20 the work his unit did for Episode 2, while John Berton will present later that day the VFX work of MIB2. Pablo Helman will present Monday October 21 more of the VFX work of Episode 2. Additionally most of the other presenters have been announced.
