ILM Helping Out with Auction for America
The guys and gals at ILM have organized and during the last few days they have started auctioning ILM crew member items at online auction site eBay, as part of the Auction For America program. The money collected from this program goes directly to help several charities and organizations involved in the September 11 disaster relief. So this is your opportunity to help out with a great cause while getting some memorabilia items in the process.
Habib Zargarpour Highlighted at the Maya Masters Website
Habib Zargarpour, Associate Visual Effects Supervisor, was recognized during AWGUA at SIGGRAPH 2001 as one of the first four inductees into the Maya Masters Program. Recently, Alias/Wavefront has opened a website dedicated to the program and it includes a section about Habib.
Dennis Muren Confirmed to Supervise Episode 2 and ILM Supervisors Confirmed
Cinefex has updated it's upcoming movies and projects pages and has listed a myriad of supervisors for several upcoming ILM projects. The main surprise is the announcement that Dennis Muren is supervising the third FX unit for Episode 2.
Official Star Wars Site Gives Episode 2 Status and Mentions Compositing
The Official Star Wars site has posted an update on the work done for Episode 2. Lucas says 800 shots are final with another 200 close to completition and seems ILM is ahead of schedule. Also the Jedi Council section has a question about blue and green screen, answered by Jeff Doran, compositing supervisor from Episode 2.
On Tuesday October 2nd, Universal released the DVD of The Mummy Returns, as a Collectors edition because of the extras. It was released both full screen and wide screen. Some of the extras showcase the work ILM did for the sequel.
Tom Bertino to Talk at ASIFA San Francisco, Working on Time Machine
Visual FX Supervisor Tom Bertino will speak in an event at the San Francisco Exploratorium sponsored by ASIFA (International Animated Film Association) San Francisco on October 17, 2001. Besides speaking of his career, he will present "Work in Progress", the ILM short animated film presented at SIGGRAPH 2001.
Ex-ILMers Barron and Masson to Talk at Purdue University
The Purdue International Center for Entertainment Technology (PICET) will hold a conference from October 7 to October 9, 2001. Confirmed speakers include Craig Barron, an original Star Wars member and founder of Matter World Digital, and Terrence Mason, who was a TD at ILM and even Sequence Supervisor for Episode 1.
As reported on VFXPro, CG pioneer Robert Abel passed away last weekend on September 23. He was at the forefront of the CG revolution in commercial (entertainment) use, and paved the way for the modern FX and CG revolution.
Just when people thought ILM's schedule might get lighter, especially considering the work left on Episode 2, we get word that they are tackling new projects: Signs, The Majestic, and K-19 The Widowmaker. Also we get word that Roger Guyett is the ILM FX Supervisor for Harry Potter.
The Alias/Wavefront website has recently been redesigned and updated, and it now includes several video clips of their past customer reels (seems the 2000 customer reel at the moment only), and among them 2 segments on ILM: one about The Perfect Storm and the other about Commercial Productions.
The Film and Video Magazine website contains two articles about Jurassic Park 3: one is an interview with director Joe Johnston and the other one is about the release of the film digitally in a few theatres.
