ILM Gets Thirteen VES Awards Nominations for 2003

The nominations for the second annual VES awards were announced today and several ILM projects got nominations in several categories including Hulk, Terminator 3, Pirates of the Caribbean, Master and Commander, and Peter Pan. ILM got a total of 13 nods (the most nominated facility) and for Best VFX in film, Pirates of the Caribbean is a finalist and was also the most nominated ILM project.

Here is a rundown of all the ILM projects that got nominated with nominees listed in parenthesis:

  • Best Visual Effects in a Effects Driven Motion Picture - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (John Knoll, Patrick Myers, Hal Hickel, Jill Brooks).
  • Best Supporting Visual Effects in a Motion Picture - Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (Stefen Fangmeier, Robert Stromberg, Nathan McGuinness, Brooke Breton).
  • Best Single Visual Effect of the Year - Hulk (Dennis Muren, Scott Benza, Michael DiComo, Wilson Tang).
  • Best Special Effects in Service to Visual Effects in a Motion Picture - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (Geoff Heron, Robert Clot, Jason Brackett, John McLeod).
  • Best Character Animation in a Live Action Motion Picture - Hulk (Scott Benza, Jamy Wheless, Kevin Martel, Aaron Ferguson), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (Susan Campbell, James Tooley, Geoff Campbell, Dugan Beach).
  • Best Matte Painting in a Motion Picture - Hulk (Brett Northcutt, Joshua Ong), Peter Pan (Yusei Uesugi, Giles Hancock), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (Yanick Dusseault, Susumu Yukuhiro, Jonathan Harb).
  • Best Models and Miniatures in a Motion Picture - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl "Captain Barbossa" (Geoff Campbell, James Tooley, Steve Walton, Dugan Beach), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl "The Interceptor" (Charlie Bailey, Peter Bailey, Robert Edwards, Don Bies).
  • Best Visual Effects Photography in a Motion Picture - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (Carl Miller, Mike Conte, Tami Carter), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (Pat Sweeney, Mike Bienstock, Grady Cofer, John Hansen).
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Peter Pan (Ludivine Sangier), Pirates of the Caribbean (Keira Knightley).

Here is the rundown of nominations per movie (not counting the one for actors):

  • Hulk - 3 nominations.
  • Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - 1 nomination.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - 7 nominations.
  • Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - 1 nomination.
  • Peter Pan - 1 nomination.

For a total of 13 VFX nominations and ILM is guaranteed at least one win since the swept the nominations for Matte Painting. Additionally there were two other nominations for projects ILM was involved in: Asylum got one for compositing in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World while the team at Pixel Magic got one for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Other notable movies nominated are The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (7 nominations for Weta Digital and Workshop), The Matrix sequels (3 nominations for ESC), The Last Samurai (1 nomination), Bad Boys 2 (1 nomination for Imageworks) and Finding Nemo (2 nominations for Pixar). On TV the new version of Battlestar Galactica, Carnivale, Smallville, Helen of Troy and Dinosaur Planet were also among the top nominated projects.
